Example of a Differentiated Lesson Plan: "Silly Feet"
The diverse learning styles and abilities of my students present in my classroom during student teaching made it necessary to consistently incorporate differentiated practices into each lesson. Early in the semester, I noticed many of my students struggling with number sense related concepts, so I integrated many concrete, hands on activities into my lessons in order for my students to develop the understandings associated with the state standards and essential questions of the lesson.
Differentiating instruction has been an integral component to my pedagogical practices and beliefs as a teacher. Through this lesson plan, I demonstrated my ability to creative an engaging lesson that involves multiple aspects of active learning. In this lesson, students created their own nonstandard unit of measurement by tracing their shoe on a piece of construction paper to measure objects around the classroom to the nearest half of whole “silly foot.” This differentiated activity met the goals of my lesson by helping students create the understanding that standard units of measurement are necessary so that the length of an object will be measured the same regardless of who measures it.
As the teacher in my third grade classroom, I quickly accessed the learning styles and abilities of each of my students in order to design the most effective and engaging differentiated lessons. This artifact is a demonstration of how I incorporated my knowledge of my students into a lesson. My students enjoyed moving around the classroom to measure different classroom objects and successfully developed the understandings to meet the goals of the lesson.
